Why do we love this case?

This lineup of reds from across France is the best of the best, from the Rhône Valley to Corbières and even including an epic wine from Bordeaux. It shows off the breadth and variety of wine’s homeland, from north to south to east to west. If you are a red wine drinking interested in French wine, but don’t know where to start - this is the pack for you!

Each pack contains ONE of the following:

We’re getting into regal territory here with this one. It’s small production CdP made mostly from old-vine grenache with small amounts of mourvedre and syrah thrown in. In most vintages, Patrick destems before ferment, but chose to go with whole clusters for 2018. This results in an immensely complex wine that can cellar for ages. The folks over at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, a crew that scores wines rather tightly, have given this beautiful drop an impressive 97 points. We can’t really add much to that, so we’ll let the wine do the talking from here.

Platinum medal Decanter

This Grand Cru Saint-Emilion is rich and ripe and at a magical point in its life, drinking very, very well. It’s a stunning example of how Bordeaux terroir shines through the merlot grape in all its generosity and finesse, with a touch of cab franc (15%) adding fresh notes to all that fruit. Expect an abundance of plums, vanilla and milk chocolate. Forest floor and herbal undergrowth are hidden softly underneath - sage and oregano, tobacco leaf. Spice ekes in around my edges, with broad, silky tannin riding on a backbone of bright acidity and keen structure. With a hefty 97 points from Decanter, you can rest assured that you are going to be drinking the top-of-the-top of Bordeaux here.

This family run vineyard is located in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is quite literally called the Valley of God (Val de Dieu). Making wine for over 250 years, the soil is grown on gentle slopes with premium sunshine, which allows the grapes to turn rich and juicy. Resting in oak barrels for a year and a half before it gets put in the bottle, this wine is big, bold and fabulous. With intense flavours of dried cherry, leather and chocolate, we recommend pulling this one out for your fanciest dinner.

We can all agree that Carlmagnus is a freakin’ cool name for a Château. It kinda sounds Scandinavian, but is actually inspired by a visit to the region by Emperor Charlemagne. That’s enough for the history lesson...what about the wine? It comes from Fronsac, an area of Libourne with international renown that predates that of the neighbouring Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. Carlmagnus is mostly merlot, providing bright plum and blueberry notes up front, with the smaller proportion of cab franc coming into play with hints of mocha and licorice. It’s opulent, smooth and complex with a long finish and plenty of life ahead of it. Definitely fit for an emperor.

“The 2019 Vin De France Oxymore is a collaboration between Thomas Farge and Stephane Usseglio and checks in as a blend of 65% Syrah from old vines in the northern Rhône and 30% Grenache, and 5% Counoise. Possessing a deep purple/ruby hue as well as Syrah-heavy notes of darker, smoky red and black fruits, gamey meats, ground pepper, and violets, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture, and ultra-fine tannins. While the Syrah is front and center on the nose, the Grenache comes through more on the palate and this is just a beautifully elegant, seamless, undeniably delicious wine in the making. Enjoy bottles over the coming 7-8 years.” - Jeb Dunnuck

Château La Brande Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2018
Allspice
Cedar
Plum
Medium-bodied
Bright
Concentrated

You don’t often hear the word affordable in the same sentence as Bordeaux, but this wine is here to change that. From the hilly Côtes de Bordeaux area, the name given to 4 côtes in the right bank, comes a wine that is on the approachable end of the Bordeaux spectrum, but does not lack intrigue or complexity. Château La Brande has paid particular attention to the raising of this merlot-dominant wine, with a third resting in each concrete, barrique and larger format oak. The resulting wine is fruit-forward, with measured oak and a lifted freshness. This is a wine that is ready to drink, and you’ll be glad when you do.
