Mamma mia! This is one reliable wine - our favourite Amarone della Valpolicella has achieved another 98pt gold medal! Did someone say something about consistency? Either Luciano Arduini has Luca Maroni in his pocket, or the wine is absolutely, irrefutably, irrevocably, equally as good as the 2014 and 2015. Amarone (dry red wine from semi-dried grapes; brings more concentrated flavour, acid, body… everything) and Luciano Arduini are one of the top producers of this style. You’d expect to pay triple figures for any example, let alone one of the best. But here we are with something that smacks of fruitcake, super-rich chocolate and spice, plus heady wafts of oaken-rich deliciousness. There is nothing in moderation here. More is more is more.

We’ve gone a bit mad for Barolo recently at the ‘Fo. The loyalists keep demanding it so we keep importing it. And we’ve got another shining star right here. Vite Colte’s Essenze Barolo earned a platinum medal and 97 points in the most recent Decanter World Wine Awards. Not too shabby! It’s made in a generous style with a nose of violets, vanilla and tobacco. The palate is quite structured, but certainly not shy with cherry, raspberry and even a hint of aged balsamic.

We’ve been importing a couple of wines from Tuscan producer Lornano for a few years now. When we saw how well Le Bandite fared in the Decanter World Wine Awards, we realised it was time for us to expand the range. This is Chianti Classico Riserva of the highest order. 100% sangiovese sourced from a vineyard at 330 metres over shale and alluvial soil. After fermentation, it sees about 20 months in French oak, which adds a cedary backdrop to the wine. This is more of a complement to the fruit rather than an overt presence thankfully, as the wine is wonderfully in balance. You’ll find black cherry, plum, licorice, earthen notes and even hints of balsam in the wine. The tannins are velvety and lead into a long mineral-laden finish. Keep the hits coming, Lornano.

This won’t be a tough sell for us. We’ve got Decanter’s 2020 Best in Show Barbaresco right here. Literally the best Barbaresco the panel tasted for their World Wine Awards. That’s it, that’s the pitch. If you’re into Barbaresco, you simply have to get this wine. Oh yeah, and it’s from the excellent 2010 vintage, so it’s had over a decade to age to perfection. Oh yeah, one more thing - the price is insanely good.

International Wine Report

We last imported this wine from the 2012 vintage and it was a hit with our mofos. Shame on us for missing a few vintages, but we’re back with the 2015! It’s not a wine for the faint of heart, but rather one that’s concentrated, dense and explosive in flavour. Perhaps you’d open a bottle or two this year just to get a feel for the wine, but then lay the rest down to age. It’ll unwind beautifully as the years go on with absolutely no rush to pop a cork. Look out for blackberries, leather, forest floor, cherry, anise and pepper on the nose and palate. The tannins will be tightly wound and quite apparent now, but those will integrate nicely as time goes on.

What, again? Luca Maroni, Italy’s greatest wine critic, has given this red a staggering 99 points for the second vintage in a row. Just to be clear, his scale goes up to 99. This is the ceiling, the pinnacle, sheer perfection. This wine is a blend of Sicilian native nero d’avola, and the French cabernet sauvignon. The combo produces a powerful blend of plush, ripe berries and structure, with future to age for many years. It shows balance, in spite of the power, with great freshness and acidity giving lift and relief from the densely concentrated body. It’s a crossover hit really - you get the exotic nero and the familiar cabernet. An absolute delight that won’t last long.
