Welcome to the new vintage of Château Sixtine, our most popular Châteauneuf-du-Pape ever! Buyer John Clark describes it as ‘one of the best wines I’ve ever bought’. Nobody’s going home disappointed with this. It’s generous and rich, but amazingly approachable at the same time. You’ll decant it, of course, to get every millimetre of depth and nuance out of it. But you won’t feel like you’re missing out by drinking it now. Have a couple this year, a couple in five, and a couple in ten. Then open your second case for the following decade. Go for a meaty lamb roast with this, and don’t spare the Provençal herbs.

Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery

As a buyer here at the ‘Fo, I taste more wines than I care to count. Some are a bit rough (we pass on those), some are only pretty good (we usually pass on those too) and some are quite good (of course we get those). But after spending so much time looking at wines, it’s honestly somewhat rare to have one of those ‘holy shit, that’s amazing!’ moments. For me, this wine from Wills Domain in Margaret River hit that level. It’s a Left Bank Bordeaux-inspired cabernet blend that balances brightness, richness, structure and complexity so perfectly. The nose is lifted with berry and violet, and the palate brings chalky tannins, herbaceous notes, hints of chocolate and enough acidity to perfectly compliment meaty dishes.

Cult Producer
American Import

There’s no shame in admitting you haven’t heard of Halcón before. This rising star of a cult producer from the Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino County (Mendo to locals) in Northern Cali lays claim to the highest-altitude vineyard in the region. The wind-lashed mountainous plot contains densely-planted vines grown in the same type of ancient shist soils that are found in Cote-Rôtie. Paul and Jackie Gordon, the team behind Halcón, are making arguably the closest thing to Rhône-style reds (and a bit of pinot noir) that can be found in North America (and doing it organically). These are rare wines that will reset your understanding of how much balance, nuance and complexity can come out of California wines. While Halcón gets a lot of attention for their Rhóne-style reds, they also make some exceptional pinot noir. The Gordon’s utilise a blend of several clones, incorporating 75% whole cluster and only seasoned French oak. The red fruits are abundant in the wine, but the name of the game is texture. Think earthy, forest floor notes, coupled with smoked meats and chewy tannins that are achieved by bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Sommelier Magazine has said that “Finca Monteviejo must be counted among the best top wines in Spain” and we agree that it is a seriously praise-worthy wine. The plot of 70 year old vines is meticulously handpicked, and winemaking is equally as precise, followed by 18 months in new Allier and Vosges oak casks. At five years old, the oak has settled into the abundant dark cherries, blueberries and cinnamon, and tannin is in check. This is a wonderful wine that will age well for many years to come.

The famed Gimblett Gravels wine growing area, a small subregion of Hawke’s Bay, is defined by a very unique stony soil type. The stony soil provides a sturdy mineral base to build on. This wine is built amazingly well with dark and brooding plum and berry fruit luring you in, abundant tannin that interplays with acid for a great texture and a solid structure that suggests serious ageing capability. Sixteen months in 35% new French oak has added power to the wine, interweaving with the vibrant, dark fruit and adding a depth and grip to the palate. James Suckling says “the palate is an elegantly crafted amalgam of fine, long tannins and smooth, supple dark-fruit flesh. Blackberry and dark-cherry flavours run long here”. We couldn’t agree more about this elegantly crafted, wonderful wine.

Old Vines

Old vine grenache from Rioja is a tempting prospect at the best of times, and when it tastes like this it’s damn near irresistible. Grown at 800m of elevation, that lofty position ensures freshness and liveliness to the fruit. Time (but not too long) in French and American oak have added power and warmth to the wine, but do not dominate. Ravishing cherries and blueberries dominate, backed by crackles of spice and a satisfying finish. Old grenache vines imbue a wine with a magic all its own, so long as you don’t get in the way. The magic is alive and well here.
